Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Slice the French bread in half lengthwise.
In a bowl, mix softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper.
Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over both halves of the bread.
Sprinkle with parmesan cheese if using.
Place the bread halves on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden and crispy.
Slice and serve warm.
